Approved by the People¡¯s Government of Jiangsu Province as one of the first batch of provincial level economic development zones, Suzhou Wuzhong Economic Development Zone (SWEDZ), known previously as Jiangsu Province Wuxian Economic Development Zone, stands to the south of the city proper of Suzhou.
Up to now, SWEDZ extends over a planned area of 100 square kilometers with ¡°one completed industrial area of 7.81 square kilometers and three industrial parks¡± under its jurisdiction. Awarded the ISO14001 Certificate for compliance with the ISO Standard 14000:1996 and the ISO 9001 Certificate for compliance with the ISO Standard 9001:2000 by the Quality Certification Center of China in August 2002 and July 2003 respectively, SWEDZ has been experiencing, since March 2001, a healthy and sustainable development with the establishment of a central industrial zone of the Southern Suzhou Industrial Belt, featuring three industrial belts: Hedong High & New Industrial Park, Dongwu Industrial Park, Wangshan High-Tech Industrial Park. The ¡°Yuexi City Sub-Center¡± project initiated in 2003 is expected to grow into a satellite city combining administration, commerce, trade, dwelling and education in the south of Suzhou city.
Blessed with an extraordinary advantageous geographic location, SWEDZ connects itself to the old city proper of Suzhou to the north, Sino-Singapore Cooperative Suzhou Industrial Park (SSCSIP) to the east, Suzhou New District (SND) to the west, and Hangzhou City to the south. Only 100km far away from Shanghai Pudong New District (SPND), it is one of the Economic Development Zones nearest to SPND to receive its impetus in the Yangtze River Delta.
Topographically, SWEDZ features a smooth terrain with its surface elevation averaging 3 meters-plus above the Yellow Sea. And, in terms of transport, it offers super convenience to and fro. With its many links across waterways, roads and airlines, SWEDZ is just an easy access: Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and No. 205 state highway run through SWEDZ, Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway and Suzhou-Jiaxing-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway pass by it. There is only 80km from SWEDZ to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and 140km to Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
Firm in place within SWEDZ is a complete infrastructure system. Roads, power and water supply facilities, sewage drainage systems, telecommunication facilities and leveling of land plots are in efficient working order already. Roads inside SWEDZ are well-linked to State & Provincial highways, which forms a convenient road network linking each and every single site within and outside SWEDZ. Two transformer stations of 110,000 voltage supply power alternately inside SWEDZ. A 28,00 kilowatt thermo-electric plant supplies steam for heating. The tap water factory in SWEDZ daily supplies 150,000 tons of water. A programmed telephone net with a capacity of 60,000 telephone lines and ADSL net cover the whole area of SWEDZ. In a word, demands for land plots, tap water, power and telecommunication, etc., can be a guaranteed ¡°There You Are.¡±
Auxiliary and other support facilities are coming to perfection, too: the Customs, the Commodity Inspection & Quarantine Bureau, Banks, Insurance Companies and the like, they all have opened their offices and starting operating inside the SWEDZ, so that relevant procedures can be handled in the zone without delay. Dotted inside the zone are also garden style residential districts, villa districts and employee dormitory building districts, equipped with full-time schools, a hygienic epidemic prevention station, a post office, hotels and a shopping center, all of which contribute to an excellent residential and recreational milieu for investors. As well, standard industrial factory structures are available for rent or sale.
SWEDZ, ever since coming to shape, has been playing host to some 2,100 business firms, including more than 470 foreign invested ones from 18 countries and areas. A lot of world famous multi-nationals have made their investments in SWEDZ, their business undertakings covering mechanic processing, electronics & IT industry, new construction materials, fine chemicals, bio-pharmacy, garment-making and so on.
